Cam Talbot turned aside 31 shots in goal, but he was outdueled by former teammate Chad Johnson---who made 29 saves in leading the Portland Pirates over the Connecticut Whale 2-1 Friday night at the XL Center in Hartford.
Johnson was on the verge of his third shutout of the season, but Brandon Segal scored his fifth goal for the Whale with just 36 seconds to play, though the Connecticut rally still fell short. The Whale were done in by a power play that was scoreless in ten opportunities, including a 2-minute 5-on-3 advantage in the second period and a pair of four-minute double-minor power plays.
Michael Haley engaged in a pair of rousing fights for the Whale, and teammate Christian Thomas had several prime scoring chances that were thwarted.
